If there’s one word that we have failed to exercise enough in this country, it’s the word “No.” It’s the most important word you can use when you set boundaries for others, and more importantly, for yourself.
No, I will not go out to eat again this week, because I am already over budget.
No, I will not use a credit card.
No, I will exercise self-control because of a larger goal that I have set.
By choosing to say NO in situations like these, and there are countless examples, you are essentially saying YES to the possibilities that await you. Would you rather spend $10.00 every day eating out, or exercise restraint, cook for yourself, and spend $100.00 once per month on a nice night out? We look at what others spend their money on and we wonder how they’re able to do so. Are they making more money than we are? Are they implementing a true plan, a real budget, and living within their means? Or, are they just unable to say no, getting themselves deeper and deeper into debt?
Without knowing them, it would be hard to determine, but one thing’s for sure, you know yourself, and you know what you do and don’t need to do in order to achieve financial success. Or do you? Perhaps you’re not in tune with the right decisions to achieve your financial goals. Maybe you don’t even have any financial goals, and you’re living in the rat race with a pipe dream of winning the lottery. Maybe you’ve never thought of your money as something you have control over.
If you’re someone who lives their life looking back at the month, wondering where your money went, then you may be someone who hasn’t written a plan for your money. Starting out with a basic, written budget (plan) for your cash flow is the first step to financial success. Saying NO to not knowing where your money is going means saying YES to a healthy financial road map for your future.
I have been saying no to a lot of things lately. So much so that it would appear that I’m depriving myself of a balanced lifestyle. I look at balance in a different light. I don’t believe it’s possible to live in short-term balance. As we go through seasons in our lives, we focus on certain aspects which, over the long term, help provide overall balance in our lives. It’s almost impossible to balance a given day between all of the things you believe you need to accomplish.
You may have to say NO to some things that you don’t want to say NO to in order to say YES to things later that are far more important.
