What is Blogging?

The term blog comes from the word Weblog, or “Web Log.” A log is simply a record of entries in chronological order, much like a diary. Blogs are simply another type of website that is typically designed around easy-to-use management interfaces that allow you to publish any content you wish without knowing the ins and outs of programming web pages.

How do I go about blogging?

There are many ways for you to begin blogging, and as you may soon learn, many things to consider to make your blog effective. Remember that building a blog doesn’t mean that someone will see it. When you build a website (a web log or ‘blog’) you’ll need to consider the purpose behind it. Are you a hobbyist…in business…or simply learning what a blog is all about? Who would read it? Is the information valuable to anyone but you? Will you be partnering with advertising affiliates to turn your blog into an income source?

Starting a blog is very simple. Visit a site such as WordPress.com to begin the process of creating a new blog. Custom blogs are much more in depth and difficult to launch. If you don’t know anything about transferring files on the internet or HTML (especially if you don’t know what HTML means) then leave the advanced blogging design to the expert, otherwise, consider the option of hosting your own blog utilizing software such as that which can be downloaded at WordPress.org. This type of advanced blog software requires a fairly in depth knowledge of other technologies as well, and if you’re ambitious enough to operate your own physical server, you can actually have complete control over every aspect of your blog, including your database server and all other extra features that go along with owning your own server.

What do I write about?

That’s completely up to you. Some people are industry experts in a specific niche, some just rant about how much they hate the world. A word of caution: If you start blogging because it’s the thing to do, or because all of your friends are doing it, and you aren’t really passionate about providing quality content for others to read, then leave the idea in the dust. There are millions of useless blogs in the world that neither you nor I will ever see, nor care about seeing.

Can I have my own domain name for my blog?

Yes, you can, but you may need to enlist the help of a professional to set it up for you. If you think you can hack it yourself, utilize a company such as CrystalTech.com to handle the back end technology and hosting, and install the latest version of WordPress, available at WordPress.org. When you get stuck, come back to The Executive Apprentice and enlist us to help you.

Blogs have exploded over the past 5 years and are now migrating towards a new era whereby the “blogger” is now considered to be a “publisher.” Either way, there is a lot to be learned from blogging, if you’re up for it.
